New York State Weatherization Directors Association (NYSWDA) -- Syracuse, NY

The two NYSWDA Training Centers offer a wide variety of training and technical services to weatherization staff and home performance contractors from all over New York State. Classroom training and laboratory exercises are integrated using the latest technologies and diagnostic equipment to provide energy auditors and field technicians an exceptional learning experience with emphasis on applied mechanical skills.

The 3,800 square foot East Syracuse Training Center offers classroom space for up to 36 individuals with a full complement of audio visual equipment and hands on props which further enhance the adult students learning experience. The facility includes a heating laboratory with an inventory of thirteen, oil and gas fired hydronic and forced air systems representing all major types of heating equipment found in the residential market. Also included at the training center is a state-of-the-art 700 square foot scale model house which was constructed using common framing details found in residential construction. The house was developed to provide students with an opportunity to observe all facets of residential pressure diagnostics by incorporating problematic areas as they relate to energy efficiency. Students are exposed to both blower door assisted pressure diagnostics and combustion appliance zone health and safety trainings within the structure.

At our new, 6,000 square foot North Syracuse Weatherization Installer Boot Camp Facility, NYSWDA hosts a 5-day intensive, hands on, entry-level weatherization installer training. Two and a half days are devoted to federal and state regulations regarding health and safety, OSHA construction safety and lead safe work practices. The other two and a half days involve hands on dense-pack, air sealing, insulation equipment maintenance, introduction to infrared training and tool and equipment safety using state of the art, full-scale building props. NYSWDA is a Building Performance Institute (BPI) affiliate member and provides on-site field and written testing for certification. NYSWDA's trainings are eligible for BPI continuing education units.

New River Center for Energy Research and Training (NRCERT) - Christiansburg, VA

The New River Center for Energy Research and Training (NRCERT) facility, located in Christiansburg, VA (near Roanoke), includes a fully equipped heating and cooling systems lab and blower door/pressure diagnostics lab. However, what really makes NRCERT stand out is that most of its training is provided "on-site." In 2002 - 2003 alone, NRCERT traveled over 25,000 miles and trained over 1,200 students. NRCERT brings its training on the road to state and local Weatherization agencies, as well as to audiences at regional and national Weatherization and Affordable Comfort conferences. NRCERT's training is complimented by its unique, proprietary House of Pressure, which has become such a popular training aid that NRCERT now manufactures them for universities, utilities, and training centers throughout the county. The House of Pressure visually demonstrates residential pressure and air flow dynamics so that Weatherization and private contractors, alike, can more easily understand the benefits of home performance diagnostics and whole-house energy improvements. NRCERT offers certificates of completion based on pre-determined competency objectives and post-training written and hands-on testing. To receive detailed information about NRCERT, contact:
