Volatile Organic Compounds
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
: VOCs are widely used as ingredients in household products. These compounds vaporize at normal room temperatures, sometimes causing adverse health effects. Paints, varnishes, and wax all contain organic solvents, as do fuels, and many cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products. These products can release organic compounds while in use and, to some degree, when they are stored.
Formaldehyde
: Formaldehyde, one of the volatile organic compounds, is a chemical used to make other chemicals, building materials, and household products. It is often found in new materials (e.g., new carpets, waferboard, plywood, urea-formaldehyde foam and fiberglass insulation) installed by weatherization workers.
Air Tightness
: Because of the potential for adverse health effects, workers should be cautious when selecting air tightness limits in dwellings with VOC problems.
