Biological Contaminants

Treating biological conditions (e.g., mold, odors, viruses, bacteria, rotting wood, raw sewage) is not a responsibility of the Weatherization Assistance Program, but workers frequently encounter these kinds of conditions.

State Procedures: Since biological hazards often relate to moisture, states should consider allowing local agencies to assess and treat moisture conditions.

Air Tightness: Workers should be cautious when selecting air tightness limits for dwellings with these types of problems.

Deferral Standards: Weatherization services may need to be deferred until another agency can resolve the problem.
