Weatherization Day 2007 Activities
While Virginia did not hold a specific Weatherization Day activity, several related events were held throughout the state. These included the Commonwealth's first ever Energy Tax holiday during which Energy Star appliances were available for purchase tax free at selected retailers. The Governor declared this holiday at the home of a woman who benefited firsthand from the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).
In addition, the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals (AECP), led by Director Billy Weitzenfeld, completed its 8th Annual Green Living and Energy Expo. This year had over 2,000 attendees and 70 exhibitors. The event yielded significantly more private & local government support and participation than ever before.
Local media coverage for both these events was excellent with several TV stations in attendance. Information about this year's Expo may be seen on the AECP website at
www.AECP.org.
Weatherization Day 2006 Activities
This Oct 30, Total Action Against Poverty (TAP) held Weatherization Day Celebrations at the Wachovia Plaza in Roanoke, Virginia. The event included a comprehensive display of weatherization measures as well as a mayoral proclamation presented to TAP by Roanoke City Councilman Alfred Dowe Junior.
The event demonstrated the many benefits of weatherization and a variety of energy-saving activities. Displays included a blower door, a model attic, a sidewall with and without dense-pack insulation, a wrapped water heater, and a weather-stripped door. A local contractor provided TAP with a used furnace that had a cracked heat exchanger to demonstrate the danger of a faulty furnace in the home.
National Public Radio (NPR) was present and interviewed many of the dignitaries and the weatherization technicians that were present. Parts of the interviews were played on the radio for days following the display.
Weatherization Day 2005 Activities
While not officially Weatherization Day activities, Virginia held site demonstrations for the benefit of several key policymakers including Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) and Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA). The events were overwhelmingly successful and generated much interest in the program.
Weatherization Day 2002 Activities
The Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency hosted a site demonstration. The agency showcased typical WAP services in the home of an eligible customer. Following the demonstrations, guests were invited to the organization's office for food, door prizes, and other give-ways. Officials from one county were on hand to present a statement proclaiming Weatherization Day.
ElderHomes Corporation in Richmond also hosted a demonstration home event. DHCD staff made opening remarks at the event, and tours were held while the Weatherization crews were at work. The state DHCD Public Relations Coordinator worked to have media present at both events. An article based on the DHCD press release about using WAP to prepare for winter was published in the Richmond newspaper.
Weatherization Day 2000 Activities
On October 25, Bill Shelton, DHCD Director, and Flores Weston, Weatherization Program Manager, were filmed for the noon segment of the Channel 8 news. Also, Channel 12 filmed a segment with Mr. Shelton and Ms. Westin on October 27 and Channel 8 has indicated the possibility of follow-up interviews. These segments should air during the week of October 30. Additionally, Channel 12 is having a call-in segment on December 13, so viewers can call and ask questions about the program. Agency staff and staff from two of the VA network providers will staff the phones. The Department of Housing and Community Development also isuued a press release that was distributed statewide.
