Weatherization Day 2002 Activities
Governor Howard Dean signed a proclamation again this year recognizing October 30th as Weatherization day. To celebrate the day, DOE Assistant Secretary David Garman and many other DOE representatives and invited guests attended a site demonstration being conducted by the VT WAP office in Burlington. Attendees viewed the array of highly technical services being provided. Television and print media were invited to cover the event. Television stations in NY and VT interviewed Mr. Garman, Tim Warfield, NASCSP Executive Director, and Derek Span CAP Executive Director. These stations aired three to four segments on the site demonstrations and the interviews. Other state sponsored events and tours were conducted throughout the state.
Weatherization Day 2001 Activities
Governor Dean proclaimed October 30th as Weatherization Day in support of the national effort to promote this important low-income initiative. Local agencies sponsored three site demonstrations to showcase the Weatherization technologies. In addition, the State office distributed press releases and radio PSA's to media outlets to promote the WAP.
Vermont Weatherization Program Overview January 2001
History
The Vermont Weatherization Program was started in 1976 in response to the nation's energy crisis. Funding for the early days of the program was provided solely by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This changed in 1990 when the State of Vermont Legislature introduced and passed bill H 832 that established the Vermont Weatherization Trust Fund (WTF). The WTF provides state funding for weatherization through a one half percent gross receipts tax on all non-transportation fuels sold in the state. The WTF stabilized the funding, infrastructure and technical capacity of the program. It also allowed Vermont to raise the average cost per job for more comprehensive work. Current funding for weatherization in Vermont, about $4.2 million annually, is comprised 83% from state funds and 17% from USDOE. Between 1980-2000, 32,516 homes have been weatherized in Vermont.
Weatherization Works!
An Evaluation of the Impacts of Vermont's Weatherization Assistance Program completed November 2001 is now available on our website at
