Weatherization Day 2007 Activities
This year Governor Ted Strickland issued a proclamation recognizing Weatherization Month
. This document was provided to all local Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) providers.
In addition to this recognition, several local providers in Ohio put on Open Houses to demonstrate the great work being done throughout the state.
Weatherization Day 2006 Activities
On October 25, the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) held a Weatherization Showcase at the home of a local client. Three television networks were there to cover the event and interviewed the homeowner and a MORPC inspector. The media and attendees were able to watch first-hand how the technicians prepare a home for winter by making it more energy efficient. Columbia Gas, which provides utility weatherization funding under its WarmChoice program, received an award from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and shared it with MORPC at the showcase event. As a key partner, MORPC was also honored for its weatherization program's success and effectiveness, which ACEEE deems as a model of "best practices" for utility-funded low-income energy efficiency programs across the nation.
On Thursday, Oct 26th, Jackson-Vinton County Community Action held a Home Weatherization/Warm Choice Demonstration at the home of elderly woman and her grandchildren. The event was attended by State Senator John Carey, Representative Clyde Evans and reporters from the local newspaper.
On Friday, October 27, 2006, the city of Cleveland's Home Weatherization Assistance Program and its Delegate Agencies, held a National Weatherization Day Celebration in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall. More than 125 individuals visited the displays and received educational materials, HWAP applications and giveaways related to energy conservation.
On October 30, Governor Bob Taft proclaimed it to be Weatherization Day, encouraging celebrations on a state wide level. On this day, Highland County Community Action Organization held a Weatherization Demonstration in Mowrystown, Ohio for the benefit of State Senator Carey and several other political and civic leaders. The event was covered by the local media.
Meanwhile, Ashtabula County Community Action held a Weatherization Demonstration in Williamsfield, Ohio. Representative George Distel (99th District) and a reporter from the Ashtabula Star Beacon (local newspaper) attended the demonstration.
The following day, Ground Level Solutions Inc, the not-for-profit energy weatherization agency serving Mansfield, Ohio hosted a site demonstration at the 95-year-old-home of a local veteran.
During the event, Mayor Lydia Reid and other key officials were able to witness an energy audit, furnace replacement, attic and wall insulation, and blower door guided air leakage reduction, to name a few. Representatives from the local media were also in attendance.
Other events included a weatherization themed coloring contest for local elementary and high school students in Noble, Monroe, and Gurnsey Counties, a wood stove safety education campaign in Washington Morgan.
Weatherization Day 2005 Activities
This year, Community Action of Wayne Medina hosted a Home Energy Savings Show at the Wayne County Fair Grounds on October 29. It was an educational event to teach people how to save money on energy in the coming months. Vendors from Wayne and Medina Counties participated by providing energy saving tips and giving away products that reduce energy use such as compact florescent light bulbs and cans of foam insulation. The staff of CAWM demonstrated how sidewall insulation is done and why, the right and wrong way to insulate walls with fiberglass batts, and how to wrap a water tank. Other state agencies also had booths and provided information to the consumers. These included the Office of Energy Efficiency, Ohio Consumer Council, the Public Utility Commission of Ohio, and the fire department.
Weatherization Day 2004 Activities
This year, Governor Bob Taft signed a proclamation declaring the week of October 24th as Weatherization Week. During this time, Ohio Weatherization providers showcased their services and beneficiaries. The state of Ohio Office of Energy Efficiency purchased "Weatherization Works" buttons and distributed them to office personnel and also to local and state officials. Agencies in Franklin County held site demonstrations, which were aired on local television stations. Van Wert County in Northern Ohio held a display at the county courthouse, and the Northwestern Ohio CAC distributed flyers to various organizations such as the social service staff, county network staff, a local health fair and numerous Head Start sites.
Weatherization Day 2003 Activities
Governor Taft signed a proclamation declaring Weatherization Week during the last week in October, encouraging the celebration at a statewide level. Local Weatherization agencies (including Cuyahoga Co. Dept. of Development, East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation, Cincinnati-Hamilton Community Action, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning, and the Columbus Metropolitan Area Community Action Organization) conducted site demonstrations and open houses for the public during that week.
Weatherization Day 2002 Activities
In recognition of Weatherization Day 2002, Ohio's Governor Bob Taft signed a Proclamation designating the entire week in appreciation for the work being performed by the Weatherization Program and the network members. There were open houses and demonstration projects presented by local providers in Columbus and Fremont on Weatherization Day and one during the following week in Toledo. Ohio provided a big push to the local providers a couple years ago, by having training on coordinating site demonstration/open houses. This concentrated effort to support public information efforts resulted in many of the local providers sponsoring celebration events.
Weatherization Day 2001 Activities
The Governor and other city and county officials throughout the State proclaimed October 30th as Weatherization Day in support of the national effort to promote this important low-income initiative. Six local agencies hosted site demonstrations to showcase Weatherization technologies. The State WAP office released a press notice to local media outlets. This release was published in at least ten local papers.
Partners
Ohio prides itself on the many partnerships that have been formed with utilities operating within Ohio. Many agencies are coordinating their weatherization efforts with funding from Columbia Gas' WarmChoice, Domimion Gas/East Ohio Gas' Housewarming Program, CINergy, First Energy's Community Connections Program, AEP's TEE, and Dayton Power and Light's Helping Hands Program.
