Weatherization Day 2006 Activities
This year, the Mississippi Department of Human Services and the Multi-County Community Service Agency celebrated Weatherization Day 2006 through a site demonstration held at the home of an 81 year old Jackson resident. Although barely able to speak, the elderly woman expressed poignant appreciation for the repairs done to her home by simply saying, "I'm happy". This event recieved coverage from several news sources including the Clarion Ledger.
Weatherization Day 2003 Activities
Governor Musgrove signed a proclamation declaring October 30th Weatherization Day. Governor Barbour will be presented with a similiar proclamation this year for Weatherization Day 2004. Of Mississippi's sixteen local Weatherization agencies, fifteen of them reported activities surrounding Weatherization Day. A sampling of those activities follows:
- Lift, Inc.
- For Weatherization Day, the Lift coordinator gave a demonstration of the various technologies used to weatherize a home. Attendees at the event included Lift Inc. staff members, Director of Programs Dorothy Leasy, Executive Director Linda Blackwell, Housing Director Donna Ping, City of Tupelo offical Peggy Woods. Lift Inc. recieved live coverage from WTVA-Nine Alive News and the Tupelo Daily Journal at the Weatherization Day 2003 home demonstration.
- Gulf Coast Community Action Agency -
This agency went "On the Road with Weatherization Works" and conducted an on-site view of what Weatherization means to our clients. Invited were partners with the Workforce Investment Center, officials from the City of Biloxi, officals from the City of Gulfport, as well as local contractors and vendors.
- Prairie Opportunity Inc.
- This organization sponsored a "Day in the Park" at McKee Park in Starkville, MS to celebrate Weatherization Day, with booths set up by utility vendors and building supply companies. The booth vendors provided the community with brochures, pamphlets and tips on energy conservation, low-cost Weatherization and health and safety measures. Vendors donated weather stripping, caulk, caulking guns, energy efficient light bulbs, spray foam insulation, thresholds, tools, and so forth, as door prizes.
Weatherization Day 2002 Activities
Governor Ronnie Musgrove signed a proclamation recognizing October 30th as Weatherization Day. Thirteen agencies listed below participated in Weatherization Day 2002 activities:
- Pearl River Valley Opportunity, Inc.
- The towns of Columbia, Bassfield, Prentiss, Laurel, Collins, and Mt. Olive mayors signed proclamations recognizing October 30th as Weatherization Day. Articles appeared in the Prentiss Herald and the News-Commercial, (Collins). The agency also held a Consumer Education and Energy Workshop in Forrest County.
- Central Mississippi, Inc.
- Proclamations were issued in two municipalities, Kosciusko and Winona. Local agency staff ordered clothing with the Wx logo on it to promote the Program.
- Sunflower-Humphreys Counties Progress, Inc.
- The local agency held a Weatherization Awareness Workshop to promote the Program.
- Mid-State Opportunity, Inc.
- The local agency partnered with Entergy and WIA SELECT Tunica PECE Program to provide 732 energy efficient light bulbs for the low-income Entergy customers in their six county area.
- Bolivar County
- Received a letter of support and recognition of WX Day from Senator Willie Simmons, 13th District. Also received a proclamation from the mayor of the City of Cleveland and a letter of support and recognition from Alderman William Ross Story, City of Cleveland.
- Prairie Opportunity, Inc.
- CAA The local agency sponsored a Day in the Park to celebrate Weatherization Day, with booths set up by utility vendors and building supply companies. The booth vendors provided the community with brochures, pamphlets and tips on energy conservation, low-cost weatherization and health and safety measures. Vendors donated weatherstripping, caulk, caulking guns, energy efficient light bulbs, spray foam insulation, thresholds, tools, and so forth, as door prizes. The Mayor of Starkville, Mack Rutledge, signed a proclamation commemorating Weatherization Day.
- Coahoma Opportunities, Inc
. - The local agency held a Weatherization site demonstration and received a proclamation from the Mayor of Clarksdale. The local newspaper printed an article on Weatherization Day and the Program.
- Lift, Inc.
- The local agency posted a banner outside their main office displaying the slogan, Weatherization Works. The Mayor of Tupelo signed a proclamation designating October 30th as Weatherization Day. The local newspaper printed an article about the proclamation and the Program.
- Gulf Coast Community Action Agency, Inc.
- Local agency staff visited local municipalities to inform them of the changes in the Weatherization Program. Staff canvassed local communities visiting the elderly and disabled residents to hand out packets of information containing: energy conservation tips, carbon monoxide detectors, and an overview of the WAP and the procedures to apply.
- Hinds County HRA/Rankin County HRA/Yazoo County CAA/Multi-County CSA
- Hinds, Rankin, Yazoo and Multi-County utilized combined resources and team work to weatherize a home in Jackson, MS. The local media attended the site demonstration. The Clarion Ledger printed an article about the WAP and the work done on the home. Channel 12 featured a story on the Program and the home in Jackson. Hinds County HRA sent press releases to all the major print media in the state. The Mayor of Jackson signed a proclamation recognizing Weatherization Day.
