Weatherization Day 2007 Activities
On Saturday, October 6th, volunteer weatherization teams spread out across the Dubuque Community in a one-day blitz to perform energy saving measures on the homes of their elderly, disabled and low-income neighbors.
The goal of this first-time event was to provide 100 homes with simple weatherization measures such as caulking, weatherstripping, window plastic, door sweeps and other insulating techniques.
The project aims to "keep the weather outside" for the targeted homes, reduce their home energy consumption, save them money on their winter heating bills and provide educational materials on how to lower their home energy costs.
Weatherization Day 2006 Activities
On October 6, Congressman Tom Latham visited a home being weatherized by Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA). Latham, a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, followed two MICA weatherization staff as they demonstrated how the agency inspects a house and conducts an energy audit on homes. The weatherization staff also showed how various diagnostic equipment and tools, such as blower doors, thermal imaging scanners, and combustion analyzers are used. Latham noted that, "This was an amazing display of what can be done and the kind of help that is really available and needs to be available."
On October 18 Senator Tom Harkin visited a home being weatherized by the Polk County weatherization program and rehabilitated through a HUD grant received by Polk County. During this event Senator Harkin spoke about the importance of the Weatherization Assistance Program. The $750,000 HUD grant, which was secured by Harkin, allows Polk County to rehabilitate more than 200 public housing units in Des Moines over a two year period. When the houses have been rehabilitated and weatherized, Polk County will sell them to low-income families.
Weatherization Day 2002 Activities
The HAWKEYE Area Community Action Agency conducted a site demonstration in Cedar Rapids. Two other local agencies, Iowa East Central TRAIN and Operation Threshold, conducted site demonstrations to celebrate Weatherization Day.
Weatherization Day 2001 Activities
The Governor and mayors from two of the largest cities in the State signed proclamations declaring October 30 as Weatherization Day in support of the national effort to promote this important low-income initiative. One of the local agencies conducted a radio interview to expain the importance of WAP to the public.
Weatherization Day 2000 Activities
One of Iowa's local agencies held a weatherization demonstration at a client's home. Several state and local government officials attended. Local media covered the event and local newspapers carried stories about the demonstration and the Weatherization Program. State weatherization staff and other local agency weatherization staff assisted with the demonstration.
