More than $600,000 in grant money available to weatherize EBR homes

Monday, September 23, 2013

BATON ROUGE, LA — The City-Parish Office of Community Development has received $619,440 in grant money to weatherize East Baton Rouge homes for households that meet certain income limits. This year’s grant amount is about three times more than was available last year, according to Jamie Mabile, Urban Development Director for the Office of Community Development.

The grant money, which originates from the U.S. Department of Energy and flows through the state Weatherization Program, is available for repairs that will lower electric bills for qualifying homes by decreasing the amount of energy needed to heat and cool them. Examples of repairs that can be funded by the program include insulating walls and attics, sealing and caulking cracks around windows and doors, sealing and repairing ducts, and tuning and repairing heating and cooling units.

The program is available to households that meet certain income criteria, regardless of whether they own or rent single-family homes, mobile homes, or apartments in multi-family complexes. However, renters must get permission from their landlords before any weatherization services can be performed.

To qualify, households must have annual incomes that are at or below 200 percent of the poverty level, as indicated on the chart below. Preference will be given to applicants who are age 60 or older, those with disabilities, and families with children.

Weatherization crews conduct computerized energy audits and diagnostic equipment to determine the most cost-effective repairs for each qualifying home. The weatherization measures reduce the average energy costs by about $300 per dwelling.
