THRHA heats up for summer weatherization

Sunday, June 02, 2013

While Southeast Alaskans may be feeling a sense of relief that the weather is finally warming up and the bills to heat our homes are going down, Tlingit Haida Regional Housing Authority is just heating up for a busy summer season weatherizing homes.

In mid-May, Craig Moore, Vice President of Development and Construction Management for THRHA announced an award of nearly $3 million from the State of Alaska Weatherization Program to weatherize 230 homes in southeast Alaska. THRHA is contracted by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) as a weatherization service provider for Angoon, Hoonah, Kake, Juneau, Petersburg, Prince of Wales, Saxman and Yakutat.

“The Weatherization Program assists Alaskans who want an energy-efficient home that is more comfortable, healthier, and gives renters and home owners the chance to save money on the cost of energy,” Moore said.

The State program has income requirements and the work is completed for free for all Alaska residents, Native or non-Native, that qualify up to 100% median family income. THRHA is one of several authorized Weatherization Service Providers throughout the State to provide free home weatherization.

In anticipation of a high volume of applicants for the free program, THRHA recently promoted Matt Bell to Weatherization Project Compliance Specialist. Bell is responsible for intake and processing of all weatherization applications. Bell has come through the ranks of THRHA as a weatherization worker, field supervisor and graduate of the Alaska Building Science Training Center, a partnership of Central Council of Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, the University of Alaska Southeast, and THRHA. The Training Center has trained over 150 highly specialized workers and certified crews for weatherization service providers across the state.

State funding appropriations over the last several years have substantially grown the Weatherization Program into one of the most valued and comprehensive opportunities offered to Alaskans. For more information on how to receive up to $11,000 of free weatherization home improvements, contact or

THRHA is the largest provider and developer of affordable housing in southeast Alaska — building new affordable housing, renovating and weatherizing aging housing stock, and providing a wide range of services to community residents, including self-sufficiency programs and employment.
