Free program aims to lower utility bills

Sunday, July 24, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Mo-- Record high temperatures can mean record high utility bills.

There's a program aimed at lowering those bills that gets to the root of the problem.

It's called the Weatherization program and it's through Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation or OACAC.

Crews come into homes to make sure they are season friendly.

Workers will put in insulation and also seal trimming around doors, walls, and windows.

This program is free for those that qualify.

Thanks to the stimulus package, OACAC has more than five million dollars set aside for this program.

Leaders say not enough people are signing up and they fear the allocated money will go to waste.

"We have some stigmas with this program, but it really is free. It is too good to be true, but it's really a free program for the people that qualify for it," said Allen Lupton with OACAC.
