Area IV honored for weatherization program

Thursday, December 30, 2010

THE NEWS

The Area IV Agency on Aging & Community Programs has won an award for its weatherization program from the Indiana Community Action Association.

THE AWARD

The Intelligent Weatherization Award honors Area IV for saving the most natural gas in a single mobile home. In 2006, the home had its natural gas bill reduced by 1,138 therms, which is a unit of heat. That amounts to a 60 percent reduction compared to how much energy was used prior to weatherization, which saves the family around $900 each year.

Homes weatherized between 2005 and 2008 were eligible for the award. During that time period more than 8,300 homes were weatherized in Indiana.

THE PROGRAM

The Area IV weatherization program is a program of the U.S. Department of Energy, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and State Weatherization Efficiency Enhancement Program that aims to conserve energy while saving money by cutting utility bills.

WHAT IS DONE?

Energy-saving measures include adding wall insulation, sealing holes in the attic or foundation, adding insulation in the attic, adding insulation to the foundation, insulating water heaters, or installing a more efficient furnace.

There also is an evaluation, repair and possible replacement of furnace, water heater, cook stoves, refrigerators for homeowners.

IMPACT

In the past year, Area IV has weatherized nearly 300 homes in Carroll, Clinton, Tippecanoe and White counties, serving more than 750 people in their communities.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Area IV's weatherization program serves people who are at or below 150 percent of the poverty guidelines. In 2010, that equaled $16,245 for one person and $21,855 for a two-person family. The money threshold moves up for each additional member of the family.

People in Carroll, Clinton, Tippecanoe and White counties are eligible if the homes are owner-occupied or are rental units with the landlord's permission.
